Psalm 55, 1 Corinthians 4:1-7, Genesis 41:1-13, Mark 2:23 – 3:6

In these verses one is reminded we are not alone. Not left on the field to fend for ourselves, we have an ally. To let this advocate do His work we must first get out of the way and rely on the assurance given in His word. In the Psalm, David is beset with enemies and more particularly betrayed by one who used to be a close friend.

Today, for most of us, this enemy is ourselves, our flesh. It is the one that wakes us at 4:00 am with those and doubts, feelings and worries we don’t talk about. But like David we have an ally in whom we can trust completely. In 1 Corinthians we are told to not judge ourselves and to trust in the truth of scripture and what it says about us. In Genesis we are reminded God gives the ability to do the things He has given us to do. And in Mark it’s illustrated we can live by the Spirit that comes through the scriptures.

There are ever so many other passages to go along with these but here are two that make good bookends:

Matthew 4:4
“Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

John 1: 1-14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things…”

Lord Jesus, help us to take You at your word. Amen.
